Introduction to “Spirit-Filled” christianity at Family Life

"Family Life was NOT like any other church I had ever attended, but after asking questions and letting God prove Himself, I would never do church any other way." - Danny Hochstatter

The Holy Spirit is an integral part of who God is and we were not designed to live the life of Jesus without it. This video serves as a brief introduction to what it looks like to express the gifts of the Holy Spirit within a body of believers. We hope this serves as the beginning of an exciting and revelatory journey with the Father, the Son, AND the Holy Spirit.

Biblical Foundation

Who the Spirit is

  • John 14–16: Jesus' fullest teaching on the Spirit as Helper, Advocate, and Spirit of Truth

  • Romans 8: life in the Spirit, adoption, and the Spirit praying through us

  • Galatians 5:16–26: the fruit of the Spirit, which keeps gifts tethered to character

The promise and its scope

  • Joel 2:28–32, then Acts 2: the promise and Peter's claim that it's being fulfilled

  • Numbers 11:24–29: Moses wishing "all the Lord's people were prophets," the Old Testament seed of Pentecost

  • Luke 11:9–13: the Father giving the Spirit to those who ask

The Spirit in the early church

  • Acts 8, 10, and 19: three different encounters with receiving the Spirit, useful for seeing the pattern and the variety

  • Acts 3–4: healing, boldness, and prayer for more power

How the gifts work

  • 1 Corinthians 12–14: read all three chapters together, since chapter 13 (love) is the hinge between gifts and their orderly use

  • Romans 12:3–8 and Ephesians 4:7–16: gifts given to build up the body

  • 1 Thessalonians 5:19–21: don't quench, but test everything

  • James 5:13–16: praying for the sick as normal church life
